Introduction. edX portal and MOOCS
edX is an American massive open online course (MOOC) provider created by Harvard University and MIT. It hosts online university-level courses in a wide range of disciplines.
MOOCs take place entirely online, and they are mostly self-paced (you decide your own rhythm for learning within a maximum period of time, specific to each MOOC).
Learn Basic Spanish online (for free) with UPV’s MOOCs
UPV has 3 Basic Spanish MOOCs on the edX.org portal (level A1-A2), available for free in this link (full program for the 3 courses), or by clicking on the individual courses in the images below.
You can enroll in each course individually or take the three courses as a package. The three courses allow students with no Spanish knowledge at all to reach half the way of A2 level of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
These MOOCs are not accepted as proof of Spanish skills if you apply as an exchange student at UPV to be enrolled in courses (subjects) taught in Spanish, as the level is below the minimum requirement (see language requirements here).
However, we encourage using these MOOCs for several student profiles:
- Preparing your Spanish language skills well ahead of time before you apply to UPV, as a basis for additional courses to reach a Spanish B1 level for admission (B2 in certain cases).
- Students who do have a Spanish B1 certificate, obtained long ago, who would like to brush up their Spanish skills.
- International exchange students admitted for project work in English (BSc/MSc thesis) or authorized to take courses in English only (limited to certain programs and partner universities only).
-Italian and Portuguese native speakers: they have no official language requirement to be admitted as exchange students at UPV, except signing and uploading this self-certification, but they are expected to be able to communicate in basic Spanish upon arrival.
Obtaining a certificate for edX courses, fees, and discounts for UPV students
On edX, all courses can be accessed free of charge, but there is a fee if the student wants to see the graded exams and obtain a certificate at the end.
UPV offers its community members the possibility of obtaining a certificate for free for any of its MOOCs on the edX portal.
Obtaining the free certificate requires a UPV domain email address (*). Instructions for students who already have a UPV email account available HERE:
(automatically translated into English from Spanish).
(*) For exchange students, this will only happen after you have been admitted, shortly before the beginning of the academic semester. More precisely, your UPV email account will be activated when your online file on the AIRE application portal shifts from “Application” to “Incoming stay” and the status of the “Incoming stay” screen changes to “In UPV” or “Enrolled UPV”. This change takes place only once the exchange student has uploaded certain documents (identity card/passport and proof of health insurance valid in Spain) and when these documents have been reviewed and approved by UPV staff.
Other UPV MOOCs on other topics
UPV does not only offer these three Spanish language MOOCs, but many others as well, and 20% of them are delivered in English.
