Regulated professions

Regulated professions are professions exercise of which requires meeting a special condition which is usually being in possession of a specific academic degree (or having passed an aptitude test or a practicum). They are currently governed by Royal Decree 1,837/2008 and the list includes very different professions. Each profession requires a different type of degree: either vocational training or university studies.

As regards the latter, the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) established that professional competencies can be acquired through an undergraduate degree (technical engineers and technical architects) or through a university Master's degree (engineers and architects).

Thus, UPV offers qualifying undergraduate degrees for the regulated professions of technical engineering and technical architecture, and, starting in the 2014-2015 academic year, will also offer university Master's degrees that qualify students for the regulated professions of engineering and architecture.

Regulated professions requiring an undergraduate degree

The following table shows the regulated professions that require undergraduate degrees offered at the Universitat Politècnica de València:

(1) Technical computer engineering is not a regulated profession, although for this purpose, it can be considered as equivalent.

Regulated professions requiring a Master's degree

Certain regulated professions require a higher level of studies. Exercise of these professions thus requires being in possession of a qualifying university Master's degree. The qualifying Master's degrees offered at the Universitat Politècnica de València have been designed on the basis of a specific undergraduate degree of reference, and together (undergraduate degree + Master's degree) they constitute an integrated study programme, as shown in the following table:

Regulated profession Integrated study programme
Architect
Aeronautical engineer
Agricultural engineer
Civil engineer
Industrial engineer
Computer engineer
Forestry engineer
Chemical engineer
Telecommunications engineer
Degree of reference Master's degree

Bachelor's Degree in Forest and Environmental Engineering Master's Degree in Forest Engineering
Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering
Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunication Technologies and Services Engineering Master's Degree in Telecommunication Engineering

(1) Computer engineering and chemical engineering are not regulated professions (and thus the corresponding university Master's degrees are not qualifying Master's degrees), although for this purpose, they can be considered as equivalent.

Holding an undergraduate degree is a necessary condition to access these Master's degrees. Graduates who are interested in taking a Master's degree should fill in an application which will be evaluated and ranked by the Master's Degree Academic Committee, taking the following factors into account:

  • The average grade for the student's academic record, on a normalised 1 to 10 scale, which has a weight of 40 to 60%.
  • The suitability of the degree of origin for the degree of reference. This suitability is given a grade on a 1 to 10 scale, and has a weight of 40 to 60%.
  • The student's CV, given a grade on a 0 to 10 scale, which has a weight of 0 to 10%.

From the 2018-2019 academic year onwards, students will be able to pre-register simultaneously for any of these bachelor's degrees and for the corresponding master's degree through the academic programmes.
